Across her practice, Geng is drawn to states of in-betweenness—spaces between identities, cultures, bodily states, and ways of understanding. This recurring interest, explored through projects ranging from performance and spatial work to objects and material research, also became a central focus of her graduation thesis at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Experiences of migration and motherhood have further shaped her understanding of identity as something fluid, relational, and continually negotiated. Her current practice turns more specifically toward cultural identity, examining how objects, images, and traditions shift as they move between Chinese and Dutch contexts. Misreading, mistranslation, and historical misunderstanding are approached not simply as errors, but as productive conditions through which new meanings and forms can emerge. This approach currently takes shape in Dutchoiserie, an ongoing body of work reinterpreting the visual and material exchanges between China and the Netherlands.
